“The Raft of Illusions” is a monumental photograph created in 2017 by Gérard Rancinan, inspired by Théodore Géricault’s famous painting “The Raft of the Medusa.” This contemporary work transposes the tragedy of the shipwreck into the current context of migration crises, depicting migrants on a makeshift raft, symbolizing their hopes and disillusions. Rancinan uses this composition to critique consumer society and the illusory promises of the West. Presented at the Venice Biennale in 2017, the artwork was later exhibited at the Musée Mer Marine in Bordeaux, highlighting its artistic and societal impact.
